Richard Matson Atkinson was the only son of Richard M. Atkinson, Sr. (1860-1918) and his wife Bertha J. Funchess (1861-1925), who were married in 1887. While his parents were married in Crockett, Houston Co., Texas and were living there in 1900, he was apparently born in Bentonville,Ark., where his mother's parents, Dr. and Mrs. Barnabus P. Funchess, lived, and the Atkinson family returned here before 1909.

Dr. Atkinson received his medial training at the Cincinatti Ohio Medical College, and I expect that's where he met his first wife, Gertrude Lloyd (1895-1950). While she was born in Tennessee, she's listed as living with a cousin in Cincinatti in the 1910 census.

After he became a physician, like his grandfather Dr. B. P. Funchess before him, he settled in Bentonville, Arkansas. An obituary detailing his medical career can be found at:

And there's a wonderful photograph of him as a young man at the same site:

Dr. Atkinson first married Grace Lloyd (1895-1950) and after her death he married Violet McAllister (1909-1985). As far as I know there were no children born of either marriage, but he and Gertrude took in a foster daughter in the 1930s.

I will add more information when I find it.
