Dorothy Marshall, 90, of Slater, passed peacefully early Friday morning, July 14, 2006, at Slater's Big Bend Retreat following several months of declining health due to heart disease.
Born Dorothy Mae Crump on April 21, 1916, in Marshall, to the late Orville Crump and Grace Shank Crump of Marshall, she spent her childhood on farms in the Midwest and in Idaho, eventually moving to Marshall, where she met Thomas Earl Marshall of Marshall. They married in Santa Maria, Calif., Sept. 4, 1944 and returned to Kansas City where they lived until the death of Mr. Marshall on July 7, 1996.
After graduating from high school, Mrs. Marshall became a beautician and worked from her home until she retired while in her sixties. During this time, she raised a son, Thomas Earl Marshall, II, born Nov. 12, 1949, now a television producer living in Desert Hot Springs, Calif.
Throughout her life she taught Sunday school at the First Evangelical Covenant Church of Kansas City and was active in church affairs.
In October of 2003, she sold her Kansas City home of more than 50 years and moved to Sullivan Hall in Slater. She spent her time there in the company of friends and relatives and enjoyed a close friendship with apartment manager Norma Wolfe.
She is survived by her son, Tom Marshall; sister-in-law Nancy Marshall of Marshall; niece Mary Marshall of Marshall; cousin Terry Harris of Marshall; cousin Dick Anthony of Slater; cousin Gary Shank of Richmond; Betty Kochman of Simi Valley, Calif.; cousin Marie McCubbin of Duncanville, Texas; cousin Bob Wahl of O'Fallon; and cousin Peggy Cannon of Lake Tapawingo.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her brother, Marvin Crump.
Visitation will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 19, at Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home, 226 South Odell Ave., Marshall, with the funeral to follow at noon. Interment will take place at Ridge Park Cemetery in Marshall.
