Detective B. Carter, 48 years old, city detective, died at the Baptist hospital at 1 o'clock yesterday, after a lingering illness of three months or more. Mr. Carter was taken to the hospital two weeks ago and all that
medical aid and skill could be was done but the end came early yesterday afternoon.

Mr. Carter was a native of fairfield, near Winnsboro, and there was a member of the Pine Grove Methodist Church. He came to Columbia 12 years ago and a year later became a member of the police force, becoming city detective three years ago. He was popular with the entire force and
with everyone with whom he came in contact and his many friends here and elsewhere will join with the family in mourning his death.

The esteem with which he was held by his fellow workers is exemplified by the fact that a handsome floral tribute has been ordered by the city police force and will be sent to bear testimony at the final resting place of this loyal servant of the public.

Detective Carter is survived by his widow, one son, 11 years old, E. B. Carter Jr., and by two sisters, Miss Alice Carter of Columbia and Mrs. C. D. Taylor of Fairfield.

Detective Carter was the second member of the Columbia force to die since the group form of insurance was adopted a year ago, Policeman Hugh Brown, who was murdered by an unknown assailant, being the first.

Funeral services will be held at the risidence, 1826 Barnwell Street, at 1 o'clock this afternoon, the Rev. R. S. Truesdale, D. D., of Main Street Methodist church being in charge. Interment will take place in the church yard at Pine Grove Church, Fairfield County.
