Ronald P. Aksel, 67, of Sterling, a retired wire and cable industry worker, died Thursday, Dec. 21, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital, after an illness. He leaves his wife of 35 years, Mary (Cox) Aksel; three sons, Ronald Aksel of Virginia Beach, VA, Joseph Aksel of Shrewsbury and John Aksel of Sterling; four daughters, Theresa McKee of North Babylon, NY, Patricia Buckley of Wading River, NY, Phyllis Stephenson of Manorville, NY and Laura McFadden of Seattle; and a sister, Regina Bergen of Jupiter, FL.
He was born in Hempstead, NY, son of Leon and Pauline (Nowalski) Aksel, and lived several years in Sterling. Mr. Aksel worked in the wire and cable industry for 50 years, mostly at Hi-temp Industries of Westburg, NY, and Surprenant Wire and Cable of Clinton. He retired in 1996. He also founded Carolina Wire and Cable Co. in Charlotte, NC. More recently, he worked part-time for Harbour Industries of Shelbourne, VT.
In 1995, Mr. Aksel received the Charles D. Scott Distinguished Career Award from the New England Wire and Cable Club. He was a member of Eight Point Sportsmen's Club, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 477 of Leominster, and the New England Wire and Cable Club.
