ADDY - Retired Jacksonville, businessman Wilfred E. (Ted) Addy died early this morning at home after a protracted battle with Lymphoma. Mr. Addy was born in Toronto, Canada, and raised in Ft. Thomas, Kentucky, and Atlanta, Georgia. He attended Boy's High in Atlanta, and met his future wife, Coribel Hardin there. They married, upon his mustering out of the Army Air Corps after WWII at age nineteen as a Warrant Officer assigned to a P-61 Night Fighter Squadron. He then attended the University of Florida, and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Mr. Addy began business in the Jacksonville firm of George Hardin General Agency in the insurance industry. He became a partner in that firm in the mid nineteen fifties as it grew into the largest General Agency in the Southeast, and continued there until that Agency's sale in the early nineteen sixties. During this time he had served as the president of the National Association of Independent Insurance Agents. He assumed the presidency of Continental Insurance Group in Atlanta until 1970, when he assumed the management of Harlan Insurance in Jacksonville. Harland was purchased by Bayly, Martin, and Fay, and he was appointed CEO. Mr. Addy was an instrumental force in Medical Mal-practice insurance industry in Florida. He formed HarlanMed, one of the first mal-practice providers, and helped to create the Professional Insurance Management Company, a reciprocal insurance company providing mal-practice coverage through the Florida Medical Association to it's membership. Mr. Addy served as an administrator at the Jacksonville University Hospital as Chairman of the holding company. He was once again instrumental in helping to expand the hospital's services, and physical plant, paving the way for the Shands Center. Mr. Addy was a member of the Florida Yacht Club, where he had served on the board of directors, as well as many committees. He was a board member of the Jacksonville YMCA. He was an avid tennis player, sailor, championship Handball player, Boxer, and a founding member of the Southern Atlantic Ocean Racing Conference. Mr. Addy is survived by his wife, Coribel Hardin Addy; and two sons, Terry, and Bryan. Mr. Addy was a member of Saint Peter's Episcopal Church where he was a chalice bearer. Services will be held there at 2:00 PM Monday, April 30th with interment at Evergreen Cemetery afterward. The family will receive friends 4:30-6:30 PM Sunday, April 29th at TOWN & COUNTRY Funeral Home.
