| Birth: | Jul. 16, 1918 Detroit Wayne County Michigan, USA | | Death: | May 1, 1995 Hale Iosco County Michigan, USA | Mike was born @ home in Detroit to an immigrant family from Poland. They think his birthday might have been on the 17th, but at that time records were hardly kept.
Mike's father was said to have killed someone in his village in Poland, and left there to come to America – His father had many brothers, but all seemed to have different last names. Mike had an older sister that was stillborn.
At the age of 12 Mike left 8th grade and started working. He lost his mother when she fell down basement stairs and broke her neck. Rumors have it someone pushed her but that was never proven. From what my mom told me, Mike did not have a great child-hood. Mike was drafted into the Army in 1941, he spend 4 years in the Pacific during WWII.
After the war he married my mom who just lived down the street. Had 2 kids, and settled into a life of being a parent/husband.
Mike worked for a trucking company and became a Union Teamster. He worked there for 25 years before he left Detroit and retired.
He sold the home in Detroit and retired to a small town in Northern Michigan. The winters were brutal, but somehow they managed to survive.
Finally at the age of 66, Mike stopped drinking and smoking cold turkey. Mom and I figure he started to get sick at about that age. He was diagnosed with diabetes.
At the age of 73 Mike had a heart attack. The doctors wanted to do a by-pass but he would have nothing to do with that. One night while watching TV Mike got up and went into the bathroom where he fell over and died of a heart attack.
His ashes were kept in my closet until my mom died this year – He was buried in Holly Michigan, in the Great Lakes VA cemetery. Family links: Spouse: Jean Kalinowski Kulik (1920 - 2009)
