Bland lived his early life in the Laclede and Wright County, Missouri area. Later he moved to the Southeast Missouri community of Gatewood. He passed away in 1959.
When he came to visit family in the Grovespring area, he was frequently asked to hold a revival in one of the local churches. There was always a large crowd that came to hear him preach the gospel.
In 1921, Bland married Mary Ethel Detherage (1895-1932). They had six children (including two sets of twins):
Leslie Herman Massey (1922-2000)
Twins Elvin & Alvin Massey (1924-1924)
Vera Marie Massey Admire (1928-1990)
Verlin Linn Massey (1930-2014)
Vernon Glen Massey (1930 - living)
Mary died in 1932.
In 1933, Bland married Thelma Mae Bennett (1916 - 2009) . They had the following children:
Two unnamed children in infancy
Dee Ellis Massey (1934-2012)
James Benton Massey (1938 - infancy)
Virgie Marie Massey (1939-1940)
George Clinton
