James Garcelon was born on the Island of Guernsey, the son of Rev Pierre Garcelon and Jeanne Bedat. James went to London when a young boy of 10, and had several voyages, settling in Massachusetts, and marrying Deliverance Annis in 1760. They emmigrated to Maine (then part of Massachusetts), and he settled on the Androscoggin River in Lewiston. James operated a ferry across the river, near the sight of the Garcelon Cemetery. It has been said that "all who bear the name of Garcelon, are descended from this man".
