Howard was the son of a W.H. and Pocohontas Coleman. He was the brother of Ruth (nee Coleman) Scruggs. He grew up in Cullen, VA. He spent his adult life in Hopewell, VA. Howard was married, but the name of his first wife is unknown. She is in the photo with Howard on this memorial. Howard's second marriage was to Ora Lee Maser (1891-1984) on August 15, 1944 in Prince George County, VA at a Methodist Church by Minister G.S. Reamey. There is no picture of Ora Lee. Howard had no children from either marriage. Each of his wives were at one time his maids and he outlived both of them. Howard retired from Allied Signal in Hopewell, VA after 30 years. He loved dogs and chewed tobacco. He lost one leg due to Diabetes. Last words he spoke to his great nephew, Ace, were "Big Boy, they're coming to take me home to Cullen." Howard is buried next to his second wife, Ora Lee.
