James R. Crawford, Sr. was born in a sod house on the prairie to George K. and Lucinda (nee Beam) Crawford. His father apparently was given land after the civil war so they went to Kansas in a covered wagon. A sod house was one that was built from large pieces of sod or grass taken from the prairie. James would tell tell stories about it. He belonged to some kind of society called "Soddies" or "Pioneers of the Soddies". He joined the society in 1955. To be a member, one had to be born in one of these sod houses built on the plains as they traveled west. James worked for a railroad in New Orleans called the Queen and Crescent, which is non-existent today and probably has been since the turn of the century. He married

, Maxine, Nell, Kathleen, George K.,
James R. Jr.
, Charles and Curtis B. who died in infancy. He worked for the C & O Railroad for most of his life after he married.
Cause of death: Complications from pulmonary emphysema. James died at Our Lady of Bellfonte Hospital in Russell, Kentucky.
