Terry Kiefer, 57, a resident of the Banks community died Thursday morning August 18, 2011 at the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland after a short battle with cancer.
Terry was born on April 10, 1954 in Coeur d' Alene, ID. He was the oldest of five children born to William P. and Betty (Lahaie) Kiefer. He was raised in Rathdrum, ID and attended John Brown Elementary School and Lakeland High school graduating with the Class of 1972. In the summers, Terry worked in the fields surrounding his hometown or as a logger in the area forests. He earned his Associates Degree at North Idaho College in 1974, his Bachelors Degree at Pacific University in 1978. Terry later earned his Master's degree from Pacific University in 1986.
He met his future wife, Mary Zubek, through a colleague. They soon began dating and 2 1/2 years later were married on June 23rd, 1984 in Spirit Lake, Idaho. They made their home in Forest Grove and in 1988 moved to Hillsboro. in 2000 they moved to Banks where they have lived ever since.
He had worked his entire teaching career at the Banks School District. Terry taught physical education to several generation, as well as coached basketball, baseball, football, and track. He retired in May 2011 after 33 years of service – 31 years in elementary and 2 years in the high school.
Among his interests were traveling, skiing, bike riding, golfing, and swing dancing. He was always an avid school sports fan and enjoyed watching his children's and student's games. As an early riser, Terry started his day by exercising at The Gym in Forest Grove. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and supporting all their activities. Terry always gave a piece of his heart to the many family dogs. He made his lasting impact on countless students throughtout his teaching career. He is proceeded in death by his mother, Betty.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary, five children: Katelynn of Beaverton, OR, Nichole of Spokane, WA, Christoper, Elizabeth, and Joseph, his father; William Kiefer of Rathdrum, ID, four siblings and their spouses Doreen (Jim) Edwards, Mark (Karol), Bret (Jane), Jeri Lynn (Shawn) McDevitt, a granddaughter; Annabelle Mischke of Spokane, WA, and many nieces and nephews.
The family suggests donations in lieu of flowers to "The Kiefer Children's Scholarship Fund" at OnPoint Community Credit Union"
