Eldest of four children born to Luther McLane Carmichael and Lillie M. Stansell.
Paternal grandparents: William Wilson Carmichael b. July 19, 1839 and Susanna Bailey b. October 7, 1839.
Maternal grandparents: Baron DeKalb Stansell b. November 25, 1833 and Caroline "Carrie" Jane Prichard b. March 18, 1837.
Married Emil Brewer on August 24, 1936 in Amarillo, Texas; one child, Julia Diane.
Moved with his parents in about 1907 from Cisco, Eastland County, Texas to Kenna, Roosevelt County, New Mexico. In 1911 the family moved to a homestead three miles southeast of Kenna.
Graduated from Lovington High School, Lovington, New Mexico in 1925. Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University) opened that year in Lubbock, Texas, and he entered as a freshman majoring in agriculture. Upon graduation in 1929 he returned to Kenna to help manage the family ranch, but the death of his father and the economic depression of the 1930s made it necessary to seek other employment. He worked for the Soil Conservation Service in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico from 1935 until 1949. After leaving the Soil Conservation Service he worked for a local business and later operated his own business in Elida, Roosevelt County, New Mexico.
Loved music, particularly the "big band sound," and sang tenor in local quartets. Was active in the Elida Lions Club and the PTA.
