Journalist. He was called the "Patron Saint of Yellow Journalism" Early in his career he worked for Charles Dana at the "Sun" and then for Joseph Pulitzer at the "New York World." He became the editor of the "New York Evening Journal", a paper owned by William Randolph Hearst. As editor, he was famous for telling his reporters, ""Never forget that if you don't hit a newspaper reader between the eyes with your first sentence, there is no need of writing a second one." His columns were carried by over 1000 daily and weekly newspapers. He owned the "Washington Times" and the "Evening Wisconsin" both of which he sold to Hearst. His house in New Jersey is now the administration building for the Arthur Brisbane Child Treatment Center and there is a monument to him in Central Park. (bio by: PW)
