JOHN R. HUGHES OF ALBIA DIES; RITES WEDNESDAY
ALBIA---John R. Hughes, 54, of one mile north of Albia, died at 2:15 P.M. Sunday at the St. Joseph hospital in Ottumwa. He had suffered a heart attack on Feb. 1 and had been ill since then. His funeral service will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic church, with Rev. Lambert Heinen officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. A rosary will be held Tuesday evening at Humeston funeral home. A memorial fund is being established, payable to St. Mary's church or to the Heart fund.
A farmer, trucker and a longtime resident of Monroe county, Hughes was born in Oskaloosa Oct. 22, 1909, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hughes.
Following the death of his first wife, Dora Flahive, in 1936, he was married to Katherine Mellick of Lovilla on May 1, 1946. She survives.
Also surviving are his mother in Oskaloosa; two sons, John Francis of Albia and Daniel Edward of Oskaloosa, one daughter, Mrs Mary Elizabeth Kehl of Dubuque; six sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Celina of Ottumwa, Mrs. Edith McConkey of Blakesburg; Mrs Ester Flanders of Montezuma, Mrs. Kathryn Mark of Lucas, Miss Agnes Hughes of Oskaloosa and Sister Mary Francellia of the Franciscan Order of Mundelin, Ill; two brothers, Robert of Newton and William of Eddyville and 11 grandchildren
