Edward J. Bitterman
Edward J. Bitterman, 96, of 211 Aberdeen Ave. N.E. died Monday Dec 15, 1997 at home.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Miller, with the Rev. Rhonda Wellsandt-Zell officiating. Burial will be in G.A.R Cemetery at Miller.
Friends may call Friday afternoon and evening at Welter Funeral Home in Huron, and prior to the service Saturday at the church.
Edward Jacob Bitterman was born Dec 29, 1900, to George and Elizabeth (Kusler) Bitterman at Delmont. He lived in a sod house until 1909. He attended rural school at Delmont.
On Oct. 29, 1922, he married Leontina Bentz at Delmont. They lived in Delmont until 1925, when they moved to Wolsey. In 1926, they moved to Hand Conty. In 1947, they moved to Miller where he worked for Tom Haugen in the grocery store. In 1952, they bought Abbotts Grocery Store, which they owned until they retired in 1962. The moved to Huron in 1983.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Miller.
He is survived by a son, Malvin (Doris) of Huron; a daughter, Verbena (Harold) Kaufman of Huron; eight grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Theophil of Tripp; three sisters, Byada Heckenliable of Lodi, Calif., Anetta Gross of Sioux Falls and Lenora Renner of Parkston; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife on Sept. 3, 1986; his parents; two grandchildren; a son-in-law, Norman Woodruff Jr.; five brothers Emanuel, Henry, Ferdinand, Tueben and Bernard; three sisters, Martha Bitterman, Leontina Renner and Elizabeth Rittel; a stepbrother, Louis Tislau; and two stepsisters, Hertha and Martha Tislau.
