Joe Butler was the son of Joseph A. Butler & Mary "Minnie" Nichols Butler. He was a lifelong resident of Kansas City, Kansas and was a graduate of De La Salle High School. He attended the University of Kansas, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He was elected to the Board of Public Utilities in KCK, serving as vice-president, as well as, working in the family funeral business.
Joe married Florence "Naydene" Rhodus in 1921 in the rectory of St. Benedict's Catholic Church, KCK. They had one son. Joe died while celebrating his sister, Dorothy Butler Schweitzer and husband, John's, 50th wedding anniversary in St. Louis.
