A graveside service with full military honors for James S. Berry, 80, of Kempner took place Oct. 26 at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen with Pastor Thomas Edwards of Clear Creek Baptist Church officiating.
Berry died Oct. 23 at a Temple hospital.
Born Aug. 25, 1936, in Tracy City, Tenn., Berry was reared and educated in Jacksonville, Fla. At the age of 17, he joined the United States Navy during World War II and served in the South Pacific. After the war, Berry flew mail for the United States Postal Service in Florida. He then joined the Jacksonville Police Force. Berry was later called into the United States Army during the Korean War and remained in the Army through the Vietnam War.
Berry's military decorations include the Silver Star, 2 Bronze Stars, the Air Medal, 3 Purple Hearts, the Distinguished Service Medal, Philippines Liberation, Asia Pacific and Vietnam Campaign, the Tet Offensive and the Vietnam Medal of Gallantry. After serving a total of 30 years, Berry retired from military service.
He was a member of VFW #8577 in Copperas Cove and was of the Baptist faith.
Berry was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Jennie Berry; and a sister, Oma Lee McArdle.
Survivors include wife, Fern of Copperas Cove; a son, Duane Berry and a daughter, Allison Berry, both of Baltimore, Md.; a brother, Richard Berry; a brother-in-law, "Mac" McArdle of Florida; a sister in law, Joan Harris of Kempner; and numerous nieces and nephews.
