Obituary - Hancock County Democrat 5 April 1883

ANOTHER PIONEER GONE

One by one they pass away. Departed this life at his residence in Buck Creek township, Sunday evening, April 1st, of cancer in the face, Landon Eastes, aged 78 years. His remains were interred in the Eastes Cemetery, April 2, at 4 o'clock. Rev. John Low preached a very able funeral discourse at the residence before interment. Deceased leaves an aged companion, to whom he has been married sixty years, to mourn his loss, besides one son and three daughters and a large circle of relatives and friends. Deceased has been afflicted for a year or more with cancer, and for the last few months has suffered untold agony, nearly the whole of one whole cheek and jaw being eaten away. Deceased was a member of one of the oldest families living in this country. There being five living brothers and sisters left, the oldest of whom is Jane Harvey, mother of O.O. Harvey, aged 90 years; Dianna Newlan, 79 years; Permelia Woods, 66 years; John Eastes, 86 years; and James Eastes, 68 years. Deceased was once possessed of considerable property; but had sold off and divided it with his children, until he had very little left.
-------------------------------------------
Note: The above information does have errors. Dianna's married name was Newland.

I just wanted to note that Permelia Eastes, wife of James Woods , died at age 87. She is in the 1880 census and died in 1899 in Essex, Stark County, Illinois.

My father told me a story about a man in his family whose face was eaten away by cancer. His father had told him about Landon, but Dad didn't tell me who the story was about, only that it was an uncle. He said that he had a bit more cut off as it spread and lost a bit more each time until he finally died.
