Obituary

JOHN H. BENTON

Mr. John H. Benton, aged 85, was born near Newcomerstown Oho November 4th, 1844, and departed this life May 19, 1930. He was the son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Benton and the last survivor of a family of six children. On February 11, 1872 he was united in marriage to Miss Rachel Ellen Wilson. They came to Putnam county 57 years ago, and a few years later moved to his late home.

To this union three children were born, namely Albert G. of near Findlay, Oliver J. of Lima, Eva R. who passed to the great beyond on December 17, 1926. The wife and mother died September 14, 1881.

On February 1st 1883 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Sarah Ellen Campbell. To this union two sons were born, Ragan, who died in infancy, and Oscar, who still survives. Mrs. Benton departed this life on December 6, 1916.

Since that time he has made his home with son Oscar on his farm near Pleasant Grove. He was active up to the last few days of his life.

The works of men like Mr. Benton have impressed themselves on the entire community; his life was lived as an open book, generous to the poor and needy. He was a kind and affectionate father, respected, and loved by all who knew him.

He leaves to mourn his departure three sons; Albert, Oliver, and Oscar; one step daughter Mrs. Effie Peckinpaugh, sixteen grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, besides other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at the late residence Wednesday at 2 p.m. in charge of Rev. Bulen of Gilboa. Burial was made in Sugar Ridge cemetery.
