John D Boyd
Astoria Argus May 19,1892.
Died, at the residence of his son, R.W.Boyd in Astoria, May 12, 1892 at 10:30 AM, John D. Boyd, aged 80 years and 20 days.
Uncle Johnny, as he was styled by everybody, was one of the pioneers of Fulton County, having settled here in 1840. He was born in North Carolina in 1812, and was the second child of a family of six. He grew to manhood in his native state. Two years before emigrating to Illinois and before attaining his 20th year he was married to Miss Margaret Henderson, who passed to her eternal rest about 7 years ago. He spent the summer of 1835 in Indiana and in the Autumn came to Illinois, operating a tannery at Rushville. After five years, he moved to Astoria, erecting a tannery, upon which is now known as the Kost and Sparks properties. He operated this tannery for many years, and after retiring from the enterprise he entered into the general mercantile business and later the hardware trade.
Eight children were the result of the marriage, six of whom are now living, namely- James, John H., Richardson W., Nancy Jane, Rachel W., and Mary E.
He had been a member of the Protestant Methodist Church for over fifty years and associated with Robert McClelland and William Powell erected a church in this town which is now used as the town hall. In about 1857 he was appointed postmaster and for over twenty-years was justice of the peace. Was made a Master Mason in 1851 and has since been an active member of that fraternity. The funeral service occured at the, under the auspices of the Astoria Lodge No. 100 F.and A. Masons, and the remains were laid to rest in the Astoria Cemetery.
