Dr. Ira Ellis Smith served in the War of 1812 in the Virginia Militia as sergeant in Captain William H. Cursino Co. of Riflemen's 1st Regiment (Byrnes).
Later as a popular citizen in Coweta County, Georgia was the county's choice as member of the House of Representatives for the Sixth District in the Georgia Legislature from 1832 to 1837 and then again in 1851. He was elected Senator in 1839, 1841-42, 1849 and 1853. He was a delegate to the Convention of 1865 that abolished slavery
and repudiated war debts and State currency for Georgia's support of the war.
