NORMAN WADE ACKLEY
BLUE BELL — Norman Wade Ackley, 87, a resident of Normandy Farms Estates in Blue Bell, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007. He formerly lived in the Pennsylvania cities of Sunbury, Westmont, Ashland, Selinsgrove, and West Chester.
As a youth, Norm was sports-active and an accomplished trumpet player.
He earned a scholarship to Valley Forge Military Academy where he continued to excel in sports, music and academics. At VFMA, he won an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, where he was captain of the varsity basketball team and leader of the academy dance orchestra before graduating in 1941 with a high academic standing.
Norm served two combat tours in World War II and survived the sinking of the U.S.S. Lexington in the Battle of the Coral Sea. Later, after serving as C.O. of Fighter Squadron VBF-11 and then as Flag Secretary to Commander Fleet Air West Coast, he resigned honorably as a Lt. Comdr.
As a civilian, Mr. Ackley was the general manager of two motor freight companies. He became a fine golfer, winning championships at two country clubs, plus the Schuylkill County Amateur championship for three consecutive years. He also played professional basketball with the Sunbury Mercuries.
Norm was a composer, director, actor, singer, and dancer in many country club shows.
He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
Mr. Ackely is survived by his wife Betty; one son, Wade; three daughters, Amy, Kim and Gail; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother; and one sister.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Normandy Farms Estates, Blue Bell.
