William Highland was(according to the 1880 census born in Ga).his mother and father were born in Penn. More than likely Edward M. Highland and Susan Petty from Jackson Co.Georgia. He was 33 years old and worked in a Saw Mill(This has been told by family)In 1880 census he was married to Mary Highland and had a daughter named Mary 5yrs old and a Son William 1year. This census was taken in Marshall Al. In 1884 there is a William Highland married to a Rebeca Rutledge. It is fact that William was married to Henrietta Bruce Hampton Highland(Buried in the city Cemetary of Florence)(at "Soldiers Rest")Married In Limestone County in Oct 1888 they came down the Tenn River on a raft. He worked in a saw mill until completing training to deliver babies and tend to the sick.(Upon coming into the Savannah area some local Dr's questioned his credentials and Dr. William is said to have made a trip back to Georgia to get proof of his Dr. Training, the school Dr. Highland attended was later rolled into Emory University in GA.-this school was set up at the time to deal with the growing need for Dr's)Upon providing proof of his credentials it was determined that he was more qualified than those Dr's that questioned him- I do know that some of his sons were Saul Highland and Walt, Jim and Joseph and Jepsie Highland. Joeseph is buried at Carson Cem around Shaw Hollow, off Hollins Creek Rd. Joseph was the father of John Highland-buried at Patrick(Iuka,Ms), nephew to Saul(Married to Loney Haynes)who had William Albert and Oney James Highland buried at Patrick, and Porter Highland buried in NewCaney TX. There were other brothers and half Brothers.(John Hampton) and a sister Maude Highland-Kidd buried in city of Florence. When the river was flooded (BY TVA) part of the Highland family went over the river to Iuka, Ms. and Settled and some of the family stayed in Savannah, Tn. Including Reuben, R.C., Rena, Rosie, Rossy, Richard. John Highland went to Iuka and Married, Alice Lard of Iuka.(Patrick Cemetery) the Highland's in and around waterloo and Savannah today and the Highland's in Iuka. are direct decendants of Dr. William Highland of Waterloo, He is Buried on the hill at Wait's and Shaw cemetery looking over the Tenn River, where he used to live.
