Elsie Alsum, age 98 of Lynden, was granted her greatest wish of "going home to be with the Lord" on Tuesday, October 24.
Born in Randolph, Wisconsin on August 16, 1908, Elsie was the daughter of Jacob and Sylvia (Oosterling) VanderGalien.
She grew up in Randolph and following her marriage there to John Alsum in 1930, together they operated a dairy farm and a Shell Oil Distributorship before moving to Sumas in 1954.
In Sumas they owned and operated the Sumas Store until John's poor health forced them to sell in 1960. They then moved to Bellingham where they purchased rental property.
Mr. Alsum died suddenly in 1962 but Elsie continued to manage her income property until she was 70. Five years age she moved to Meadow Greens in Lynden where she lived independently until her death.
Mrs. Alsum was a long-time member of what is now Hope in Christ Church in Bellingham.
Besides her parents and husband, Elsie was preceded in death by her twelve brothers and sisters.
She was very loved by her family, and will be greatly missed. We thank God for choosing her to be our mother and for the privilege of being her children.
Private family graveside services will be conducted by Rev. Gordon Terpstra on Friday, October 27, in Monumenta Cemetery in Lynden. The family extends an invitation to join them at a reception and time of fellowship in Elsie's memory at 2:00 p.m. on Friday at the Grace Baptist Fellowship, 338 North Park Street, in Lynden.
Memorials may be made to Hope in Christ Church, 710 East Sunset Dr., Bellingham, WA. 98225.
