William A. "Bill" Bates, 76, of Olney, died at 5:20 p.m. Thursday, April 24, 2003, at Burgin Manor in Olney.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Summers-Kistler Funeral Home in Olney. Masonic services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Reverend Charles McDonald officiating.

Burial with military rites will be in Crest Haven Cemetery near Claremont.

Mr. Bates was born on March 9, 1927, in Charleston, the son of John Rubin and Mary (Flescher) Bates. He married Betty McWilliams on July 2, 1950. She survives.

After a time in the U.S. Navy, he spent most of his adult life in Columbus, Ohio. His vocation was electronic sales and repair. He and his wife retired in 1984 and moved to Olney. He was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church in Olney. Mr. Bates was an avid ham-radio operator and a member of White Squirrel Radio Club. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge in Olney and 32nd Degree in Danville.

Mr. Bates is survived by his wife, Betty Bates, of Olney; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Woodrow, Harlan and Floyd, and a sister, Betty Wood.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel United Methodist Church in Olney.
