Smith Baugh enlisted in the U.S. Army on November 19, 1942 in Oklahoma City, OK.
He volunteered for parachutist duty and was assigned to the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division.
Smith participated in the D-Day jump into Normandy and was awarded the Bronze Service Arrowhead, a small device worn on the EAME (Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign Medal) ribbon and which denotes participation in a combat parachute jump.
He was the son of Samuel G. and Mattie E. Baugh and had sisters Devault and Vivian.
