Mary Jane “Polly” South Brunk was the first child of Daniel South (1760-1819) and Susannah McCoy South (1762-1824). Mary Polly had eight brothers and sisters. Mary Polly and her first 4 siblings, Thomas, Benjamin, Archibald and Susannah were all born in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland USA between the years of 1785 (Mary Polly’s birth) and 1794 (Susannah’s birth). Between 1794 and 1795, Mary Polly’s father, Daniel South, moved the family from Maryland to Mercer County Kentucky. Between 1795 and 1803, three more of Mary’s siblings arrived, John N, Henry and James Daniel. Mary Polly South lived in Mercer County Kentucky from the time she was about 10 years old until she was 18 years old. In the fall of 1803, Daniel moved the entire family to Jackson Township, Clermont County Ohio. It was September 19, 1805 when Mary Polly South married Joseph Brunk, a longtime family friend. Joseph was eight years older than Mary Polly South. That fall, Mary had another sister, Elizabeth. Now counting, Mary Polly was one of nine children of Daniel and Susannah’s.
Mary Jane “Polly” Brunk found herself with her first child, Daniel Brunk in 1808. Mary Polly Brunk blazed the frontier with her husband Joseph Brunk in Clermont County in a town known as Monterey. She lived close to her parents and all but one of her siblings, Henry, stayed in Jackson Township to raise their families. Between 1808 and 1823, Mary Polly had 7 children, Daniel, Anna, David, Henry, Joseph Jr, Susannah and Wesley.
Mary Polly died in her 45th year. Joseph was 13 years old, Susannah was 8 years old and Wesley was 7 years old. All seven of her children grew to be remarkable and honorable people. Mary Polly was a grandmother of more than 30 children.
She was buried in the South Family Cemetery, June 1830, near her parents, Daniel and Susannah South.
