Son of Josiah and Jane Catherine Kinard Austin. (see "Mississippi Cemetery and Bible Records" Volume XI, Page 97 for a transcript of the Josiah Austin Family Bible)

According to the WWI draft registration, Joseph Tilden Austin was born August 17, 1876. He was a self-employed Planter. His wife (listed as nearest relative) was Martha C. Austin. He was tall, medium build, had grey eyes and had light brown hair.

His funeral was handled by the Peters Funeral Home. The records for the funeral home are kept in Special Collections, Ouachita Parish Public Library. Joseph's record (Book 12, Page 83) contains the following information:

Joseph Tilden Austin, aged 73 years 11 months 22 days. Place of Birth: Songalo, Miss. Funeral held from Chapel. Date of Birth: August 17, 1876. Minister, Rev. Hugh Bradshaw. Color W, Nationality U.S., Interred at Old City Cemetery. Widowed. Date of Interment: 8/10/50 at 10 am. Late Residence: Loop Road, Monroe. Not a veteran. Date of Death: 8/9/50. Place of Death: Wright-Bendel Clinic. Dr. Geo. Wright physician.

Man Prominent In Business And Agriculture Expires At 74
Joseph T. Austin, 74, for many years active in business and agricultural interests of the parish, died early Wednesday morning. Mr. Austin had been in declining health for several years but was active until several days ago.
He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Luray Youngblood, McComb, Miss., Miss Bell Austin and Miss Jennie Austin, both of Monroe; a son, Tilden Austin, of Monroe; a daughter, Mrs. Martha Dyart, of Monroe; three grandchildren, Clayton Campbell, Susan Austin and Patricia Austin, and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Austin came to Monroe in 1906 from Songalo, Miss. He became associated with the old Ouachita National Bank as teller and remained with that institution for a number of years, and was cashier when he resigned to enter the insurance business.
He became manager of the McLain plantation upon the death of Capt. McLain and was also owner of the Standard Gin Company. During the past few years he was engaged in various farming activities of his own.
Mr. Austin was associated with the late P.M. Atkins in several business enterprises. He and Mr. Atkins built Hotel Vicksburg in Vicksburg, Miss., in the late 1920s and they were joint owners of the hotel until it was sold to the Grady Manning chain in the late 30s.
Besides his business activities here, Mr. Austin perhaps was best known as a sportsman. Hunting and fishing were his hobbies and he was an avid baseball fan. He and Mr. Atkins operated the Monroe baseball team in the Cotton States League during the late 1920's and they were joint owners of the hotel until it was sold to the Grady Manning chain in the late 30's.
Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Peters Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Thursday. Rev. Hugh Bradshaw, pastor of the Memorial Presbyterian Church of West Monroe, will officiate. interment will follow under the direction of Peters Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are P.E. Massey, Clarence Marks, Charles Beadle, Courtney Oliver, Thomas Leigh and Rex Ensminger.
