By Don Eldredge

H. Hugo Adlof Jr., whose name marks sidewalks throughout Sherman as a result of his almost 70 years as a local concrete contractor, died early Sunday at Sherman Nursing Home.

Adlof, 87, had been semi-retired in recent years, but still worked into his final year at Hugo Adlof Concrete, a business he and his father founded in Sherman in 1918.

Though he never held public office, Hugo Adlof Jr. was also well known in the city for his many comments and opinions stated at public meetings involving the school board and city council. He was a frequent letter writer to the Sherman Democrat and most recently had been a strong advocate of using existing building space to house state prison cells.
“I get compliments on those (letter to the editor) all the time,” Adlof said in 1988 interview appearing in the Sherman Democrat.
Expressing his love for the city, he stated in the same interview, “I’ve traveled many a town and state – every one in the nation. But it always feels pretty good to come back home. It’s a nice quite town; a friendly town.”

Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Adlof will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The Rev. Thomas Speiser will officiate. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Arrangements by Dannel Funeral Home.

Mr. Adlof was born in Sherman Oct. 11, 1903, the son of Herman H. Adlof Sr. and Ella Paine Adlof. He attended Sherman public schools as well as business school.
On June 3, 1923, he married Ruby Lee Jackson in Sherman. She died in December 1988.

He was a member of St Mary’s Church, the Knights of Columbus and was associated for many years with St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Surviving are three sons: James H. Adlof of Sherman, Bobby C. Adlof of McKinney and David Adlof of Waxahachie; two daughter, Margaret Buchanan of Lake Medina and Velma Adlof of Sherman; a sister, Mary Bollinger of Missoula, Montana; 13 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
Grandsons will be pallbearers.

Rosary will be recited by St. Mary’s Deacon James Adlof at 7 p.m. at Dannel Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Home Hospice of Grayson County, P.O. Box 2283, Sherman, Texas 75091, or to St Mary’s Catholic Church.
