Born in Whitekirk to Hugh Bertram and Isabella Mack. His father was farm stewart on George Hope's large farm in Dirleton. Married Mary White in Perth in 1869. He managed a large farm in Whitekirk. They used to board Scottish artists with their family, and as result there exist many portraits of the children painted by artists such as Blacklock. Hugh and Mary were the parents of Helen ("Nellie"), Isabella ("Belle" or "Tibbie"), Hugh, John (died as infant), John James, Unnamed girl, and Mary ("Mamie"). Health problems prompted a move to Edinborough. Several of his brothers and sisters had emigrated to Canada, and in the spring of 1891m Hugh and his son Hugh came to Canada 1and went to stay in Peterborough at one of his sisters homes - Cherry Bank Farm. In the fall of the same year, his wife and remaining children came to Dundas Ontario, and went to stay with Hugh's brother Peter. In November of the same year, they were all reunited and moved to Vine Vale Farm on Red Hill Road just east of Hamilton. They were there for 2 years and moved to a farm west of Vinemount, and from there to a farm east of Vinemount where they remained for many years.

Mary died in 1922 at age 77. Sadly, Hugh died three years later at 80 from senile dementia.
