Ernest Bruce "Shorty" Allan was born in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada prior to moving to the United States with his family as a young boy. He was raised in Normal, IL and graduated from Illinois State Normal University. He served overseas with the US Army during WWI, and was wounded during the war. He returned to Normal after his tenure in the service and married Elizabeth Watters from Potomac, IL. They had a son, Robert Bruce, and five granddaughters.
Mr. Allan bought the Hildebrandt Drug Store in Normal, which he ran until his retirement in 1970. He was very active in the Normal Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary, and was a member of the VFW. Additionally, he was named Normal's Citizen of the Year in 1970. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Normal. He died in July 1980 after a long illness and is buried at Park Hill Cemetery in Bloomington.
