According to federal census records, 18 year old John was living in his parents household in Luzerne, Fayette County, PA, on September 7, 1850.
Within that same year, John went to Perry County, Ohio, where he joined the Methodist church, and, on September 16, 1855, married Juliet Elizabeth Iliff. They had two daughters, Harriet, born in 1856, & Soloma, born in 1860.

His personal description at enlistment was 5 feet 11-3/4 inches tall; light complexion; blue eyes; sandy hair. His occupation was farmer. According to documents in his pension file, John had contracted chronic rheumatism prior to enlisting in the Army, and, was discharged on January 28, 1863 because of disablity in connection with the condition. John & Juliet stayed in Perry County six more years and had two more children born there, Mary Jane (Jennie) in 1864, & Thomas John (or TJ) in 1867.
In November 1869, John, with his wife & children, went to Nebraska and homesteaded on an 80 acre farm 10 miles Northwest of Ashland in Saunders County. John & Juliet had 2 more daughters after moving to Nebraska, Julia Elizabeth (Lizzie), born in 1872, & Edna May, born in 1875.
Eventually John acquired 800 acres of land in Saunders County, half of which he eventually made over to his children, selling the rest. By 1896, John & Juliet's children were all married and living nearby, starting families of their own.
Their 2nd daughter, Soloma, passed away in 1898. There were 15 grandchildren when Juliet passed away on May 9, 1900 and six more born by late 1908.
