Donald L. Barrett remembers going with his mother when he was a child as she filed election papers, and the long hours spent holding signs on the streets, waving to potential voters. Katherine (Linscott) Barrett of Pembroke, who finally won her bid to be a town selectman in 1994, died in her home on Friday. She was 67.

"She wasn't the first woman to run for selectman [in Pembroke], but she was the first to be elected," said Donald Barrett of Carver. "She was very proud of that."

Mrs. Barrett, known as Kathie, was an advertising representative as well as a politician. She died from an infection caused by an unspecified illness.

Born in Pensacola, Fla., the child of parents who served in the Navy, she lived in several communities before her family settled in Hingham. She graduated from Hingham High School and attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine.

She met her future husband, Edward R. Barrett of Hingham, at a church party in the town. After he was nudged by a friend toward the future Mrs. Barrett in the kitchen, the two started chatting and it was a match, her son said. They were married in 1962.

Mrs. Barrett began her lengthy career as an advertising representative in 1971, her son said, working in Rockland. She eventually joined the Memorial Press Group in Plymouth, where she was employed for 25 years.

Concerned about the quality of education in Pembroke, she served on the Pembroke Elementary School Committee and the Silver Lake Regional School Committee, both for nine years. She also served as a member of the town's Housing Authority for three years.

A member of the Plymouth County Selectmen's Association, Mrs. Barrett was also a member of the National Federation of Press Women for four years.

"She wasn't really a women's rights advocate, but she really felt like she was breaking some ground," said her son.

Mrs. Barrett enjoyed being involved in church activities, teaching Christian development classes, and participating as a member of the Ladies Sodality at St. Thecla's Church in Pembroke.

Besides her son Donald, Mrs. Barrett leaves another son, Robert A. of Plymouth; a daughter, Stacia Crowley of Pembroke; and seven grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be said Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Thecla's Church. Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery in East Pembroke.
