Born on British ship off coast near Norfolk, VA. to John Brownlow Alexander and Mary B. Haner.
Brother of Margaret, Fannie G., Mary V., Louisa B.
Entered VMI 8/26/1852; graduated 7/4/1856 25th in a class of 33.
Married to Anna Williams in 1859. Father of son E.C., daughters Margaret F., Fannie G.

Company M of Spotsylvania County, 55th Virginia Infantry, Field's Brigade, A.P. Hill's Division, 2nd Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.

Residence Fredericksburg, VA.
Enlisted on 4/23/1861 at Fredericksburg for 12 months' service, he was commissioned into Fredericksburg Virginia Light Artillery as a 1st Lieutenant.
Listed as Absent, "Detailed for Special duty at Naval Battery at Aquia Creek, VA." on July & August and Sept & Oct 1861 Rolls.
In Fall 1861 he was commissioned Captain of his own Virginia Heavy Artillery Company which was assigned to the 5th Alabama Infantry as Company F.
Elected 3/13/1862 Captain, Commanding, of Company M of Spotsylvania, VA., 55th Virginia Infantry.
Praised for conduct in Seven Days' Battles.
Hospitalized 8/19 - 9/1/1862 with hemmorhoids in C.S.A. General Hospital, Farmville, VA.
Resigned 2/19/1863 due to chronic diarrhea.

Postwar, Civil & Mining Engineer in various parts of U.S., including Washington, DC.; Boston; NYC; Alabama, California.

The 55th Infantry Regiment was organized in September, 1861, by the addition of four companies to W.N. Ward's "Essex and Middlesex" Battalion of Virginia Volunteers.
It sustained 110 casualties at Chancellorsville.
In February, 1865, the 47th and 55th Regiments were consolidated.
