Obituary from the "Nashua Reporter" of Nashua, Iowa dated 17 Mar 1960:
Mrs. Grace Bailey, 71, Teacher and Publisher, Succumbs to Long Illness
Final rites were held Monday afternoon for Mrs. Grace Bailey, whose unflagging spirit sparked The College Hill Print Shop at Cedar Falls, and its associated publishing enterprises, through the years.
Mrs. Bailey died at the age of 71 on Friday, March 4, at Sartori hospital, Cedar Falls, where she had been hospitalized for several weeks. She had long been ill, and retired from business for this cause last October.
Grace Bailey was best known in Cedar Falls as the business manager and driving force behind the print shop business itself, and The Cedar Bulletin. She carried on The Cedar Bulletin and its community service, after The Diamond Brothers' dissolution threatened its existence. The Bulletin was founded by The Diamonds, and always was printed in the Bailey shop.
Mrs. Bailey also was well-known in other communities, where, during a 23-year period, they had published papers in Plainfield, Nashua, Marble Rock, Shell Rock and Hudson.
Several of these were published during the war years, when publishers in those communities were called to service, and Mr. Bailey's work therein gave those towns a printed medium during the duration. Nashua, for instance, was served for 18 months, during the time Publisher Robert Goodsell was in service.
Aside from service to Cedar Falls, the community longest-served by Mrs. Bailey was Plainfield, where she began a community shopping paper more than 20 years ago in cooperation with the Plainfield businessmen. She continued the Plainfield paper and her weekly, sometimes twice weekly, visits there, in spite of almost incessant demands upon her time at home, and in spite of the toll of the years. The Plainfield paper is now published at Nashua.
Her partner in the business through the years was her husband, Joel D. Bailey, whom she married June 7, 1911, and who also retired last October.
She is survived by her husband; a son, Morris L. Bailey of Cedar Rapids; and two daughters, Mrs. Alice Conway, Washington, D.C., and Mrs. Joeldine Fennema of Ledyard. Other survivors include 10 grandchildren; three brothers and three sisters. She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter.
The funeral was conducted from the Evangelical-United Brethren church, the Rev. Donald Iles officiating, and burial was in Greenwood cemetery, Cedar Falls.
Mrs. Bailey was born in Cedar Falls in 1888, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Hartzell. She moved with the family to Britt when she was age 10. It was in Britt that she married Joel Bailey, who is a son of the "Bailey of Britt" famed in Iowa History. They established their own printing business after their marriage. Prior to her marriage, Mrs. Bailey had attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, and had taught school in Hancock county.
Mrs. Bailey had a strong sense of community participation, and was a member of church, civic, social and fraternal groups.
She was an avid reader, being especially interested in contemporary affairs, and her writings reflected her keen interest in such matters, be they on local, state or wider basis.
