Alice Irene Adkisson was born 14 Jan 1880 in Maury County, Tennessee to Absalom Adkisson and Matilda Agnes Matthews. Absalom was a veteran of The Civil War, having served in the 9th Tennessee Cavalry Battalion for the C.S.A. After the war, he practiced farming the Bigbyville community of Maury County and actively involved in the McCains Presbyterian Church. Absalom was the son of Yearby Adkisson and Gracy Goff. The parents of Matilda Agnes Matthews were James Washington Matthews and Katherine Dooley. Irene was married to Fletcher Clayton Abernathy, a native of Giles County, Tennessee. He was the son of John Wesley Abernathy and Katherine Alexander Tarpley. Shortly after they married, they purchased the Matthews family farm, which had recently been owned by Irene's aunt, Lizzie J. Matthews Hart. Here they raised their five children, Mary Grace Abernathy Peters, Agnes Eleanor Abernathy, John Wesley Abernathy, Raymond Fletcher Abernathy, and James Matthews Abernathy. They became active in the community especially as members of the Bigbyville Methodist Church. Irene died 22 Jan 1964. She and her husband are buried at the McCains Cemetery with many members of the Adkisson family.


The Passed This Way, Vol. 2, page 371:

Mrs. Abernathy died Wed. in Columbia. Mrs. Irene Adkisson Abernathy, 84, widow of Flectcher C. Abernathy and a long time resident of the Campbellsville Pike, died late Wed. afternoon at Maury Co. Hospital following a short illness. Funeral services to be Fri. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home; burial will be in the McCains Cemetery. A native of Maury Co., she was the dau. of the late Ab and Matilda Matthews Adkisson. She was a member of the Bigbyville Methodist Church and was active for many years in the Womens Society of Christian Service. Her husband, a well-known Maury Co. farmer, died Nov. 3, 1958. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. W. L. (Grace) Peters, Escanaba, Mich., and Miss Eleanor Abernathy, Huntsville, Ala.; three sons, John Wesley Abernathy, Florence, Ala., Raymond Abernathy, Orlando, Fla., and Matthews Abernathy, Columbia; and seven grandchildren.
