The first child of Katie and Fay Buffington from Jordan, Montana, Minnie Ruth was the light of their lives.

"Little Ruth" had blonde hair, blue eyes, and she danced to music trying to sing, much to their delight. She choked on the brown skin of a peanut and died from ether pneumonia after doctor's tried to remove it. She was 22 months old.

Six weeks after her death, a sister named Amy Rose was born. Katie nearly died minutes after Amy's delivery.

Katie grieved over the loss of little Ruth for the rest of her life. In her later years she once said, "When we lost little Ruth I asked God never to send me another blue-eyed, blonde haired baby. He never did. God answered my prayer."

When Amy was about six weeks old, the little family returned to the Rosebud Creek country in Rosebud County, near Forsyth, Montana, and within a few months, to the homestead north of Jordan, Montana, on Hell Creek. They returned during the flu epidemic of 1919. On the train people had scarves tied over their noses and mouths to protect from getting the flu.

Fay's health had made a comeback after working in the shipyards during WWI to get back on his feet emotionally and financially after cattle thieves butchered yearlings he was running on shares, ruining the couple financially.

They arrived back on Hell Creek with a new baby, and a new determination to start over again.

Poem written by Ruth's mother, Katie Buffington, in July of 1932 - 15 1/2 years after Ruth's passing:

BABY RUTH

Dancing curls and bright blue eyes,
Dimipled fingers and hands and toes
Cherry lips and pretty teeth
And O! The tiniest little nose.

Baby Ruth, you've won my heart.
Stolen it by your winsome ways.
Like a full-grown cupid you hold the reins
Tighter and closer thro all those days.

Baby Ruth you've stolen away home
To your maker, your God, your King,
Leaving behind an empty house
And sad memories of your voice's ring.

Baby Ruth won't you please pray for me
Up in your home with Christ so mild.
Ask him to come and call for me
Take mehome toyou, darling child.

Dedicated to Minnie Ruth Buffington

Another poem written by Katie ...

DEDICATED TO RUTHIE

God sent a Heavenly messenger
And called our darling away.
He knew how much we loved her,
And the grieving there would be.
So He must have had a reson
For He knew better than we
Death leaves a scar upon the heart
No human man can heal
But the memories are something.
Tonight and every night
The stars shine upon a precious grave
Where sleepeth without dreaming
One we loved but could not save.
Sleep on, Ruthie!
God knows best.

We hold you in our dreams at night.
We call you in the dawn and yet
We have to tell ourselves you are really
Gone beyond and there is nothing we can do and
Nothing we can say.
You were so gentle
Sweet and kind
And always darling in our mind -
No there is nothing we can say
Except a loving prayer.
And God will bless you, dearest one,
And God will keep you in His care.

No date.
