Dawn Nostrand Finn of Blauvelt, NY lost her valiant nine-year fight with cancer on October 12, 2011 surrounded by her loving family and friends. Dawn was born October 20, 1949 in Mount Vernon, NY and later moved with her family to Tarrytown. She graduated from Sleepy Hollow High School in 1967 and from Mercy College in 1971. Dawn taught English at Washington Irving High School. Dawn married her third and current husband Steve Finn on November 2, 1985. In addition to her loving husband, she is survived by her beloved son Ryan, her stepchildren David and Sally Finn, Stacey and Cory Notrica, grandchildren Brian, Jack and Maxx Finn and Hannah, Nyssa and Lucy Notrica, brother Charles and sister in law Kathy Nostrand, loving nieces Amanda and Molly Nostrand, Brother in Law Wil Gonzalez, Aunt Bea and Uncle Rocco Orsino, Aunt Dee and Uncle Len Carlson residing in Florida, cousins Robert and Nancy Orsino, Robbie and Megan Orsino, James and Lesla Orsino and Jessica, Dillon and Chris Orsino. Dawn also leaves numerous dear friends. Dawn was predeceased by her parents Jo Ann and Charles Nostrand, Jr., her cherished sister Tricia Nostrand-Gonzalez, her maternal grandmother Albina (Nana) Bassani and paternal grandfather Charles Nostrand. Dawn was tireless in her efforts to help and give to others. She was Director of Section 8 Housing Authority in White Plains and Director of Section 8 in Nyack Housing Authority. Dawn was also a Property Manager for many years and treated her clients and tenants with respect and great care. Dawn was active in the Democratic Party and considered a run for local office before her illness. Dawn's great love was children. She was active in the South Orangetown School District for many years and served on numerous boards and committees including tenures as SOCES PTA President and South Orangetown Middle School PTA Co-President. She established the "Halloween Happening", a community service event for the SOMS students and fun day for all children in the district. She worked tirelessly and vocally to promote education and integrity in SOCSD and, in recognition, was awarded the New York State PTA Honorary Lifetime Award. Another passion in Dawn's life was animals. She had a magic touch with pets and wildlife. Along with her cherished Koi pond, her home is a menagerie of the beautiful wildlife of Clausland Mountain in the Blauvelt area. Dawn will always be remembered for her devotion to her family, her treasured friendships, her incredible generosity and her iron will to live. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Hannemann Funeral Home, Inc., 88 S. Broadway, Nyack, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday at 10am at St. Catharine of Alexandria Church, 523 Western Highway, Blauvelt, NY. Burial will follow at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in Dawn's memory to People to People, 121 West Nyack Road, Nanuet, NY 10954 or Hudson Valley Humane Society, 200 Quaker Road, Pomona, NY 10970.
