Betty "The Pretty One" was a special dog. She was forced on us when she and her sister dog, Harro, became depressed when my sister gave Harro to my son, Zac. The two could not be separated so I caved in and said "okay, what's another dog". She always stayed in the shadow of her sister, Harro "The Wonder Dog", who would do all the tricks. She was very ladylike, until something upset her, then she became my "Little Demon Dog". Her bark could pierce your ears and nothing would step in her way when she was serious. She never did bite anyone, but she would put fear in the biggest man around. Nobody, messed with her territory. She was a great watchdog. She was so sweet and loving. She loved her bath and getting prettied up. She got to sleep in the house sometimes unlike Harro who couldn't behave herself. Although, after losing Betty, Harro is now a spoiled house dog.
Living on a beautiful farm in the Ozarks is a wonderful experience for any dog. She could run to the river or creek to get a drink or swim. She loved to swim. She would run in the pastures all day and chase squirrels in the woods. But, yesterday brought the reality to our home that we live in a very wild land next to a National Forrest and free roaming wild animals.
Betty was mauled by a Bobcat, Mountain Lion or Bear, the vet is not sure exactly what it was. I bet she put up a brave fight against that critter. Harro was there too, but was not even harmed. She probably put herself in harms way so she could save her sister. She made it home with a huge piece of her back end taken out. It was so pitiful that my son had found her in the field when he got home from school. We rushed her to the vet and I was almost certain she would have to be put to sleep, but the vet thought he could save her. He worked on her for 3 hours and we got the call that she had made it though the operation, but had died of cardiac arrest after the surgery.
Though we are sad, we know the little "Demon Dog" is now our little "Angel Dog" protecting us from the Rainbow Bridge. Harro is sad and just the mention of her name sends her in a tissy of searching for her, but we're certain she knows where Betty is and will wait until they can be together again.
We are taking her back to my sisters farm to be buried, that's where she was born. She loved going back and visiting. Now she's home.
