Helen Wilson Allen, 101, of Dahlgren passed away at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at Hamilton Memorial Nursing Center in McLeansboro.
She was born Aug. 28, 1907, in Broughton, the daughter of Robert and Edith Brinkley Wilson. In 1930, she married Omar Ethan "Petie" Allen, the well-known proprietor of Allen's Cafe in Dahlgren who passed away in 1986.
Two sons, Omar Edward "Eddie" Allen and wife Sabrina of Dahlgren and Howard Wilson Allen and wife Lorie of Carbondale, survive her. She had six grandchildren, Daniel J. Allen of Dahlgren, Pamela S. (Allen) Mandrell of Waltonville, Owen E. Allen of Ina, Dr. Mark W. Allen of Redlands, Calif., Dr. Robin W. Allen of Boise, Idaho, and Laura S. Allen of Boise, Idaho, and six great-grandchildren.
She was the last survivor of the seven children of Robert and Edith Wilson.
Helen Allen attended the public schools in Hamilton County and graduated from McLeansboro High School in 1924. She attended Southern Illinois University, then Southern Illinois Normal University, in Carbondale in the late 1920s and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in education from SIU in 1960.
She launched her long teaching career at the age of 19 in the rural schools of Franklin, Jefferson and Hamilton counties in the mid-1920s and taught first music and later fifth grade in the Dahlgren Elementary School from 1937 until she retired in 1973.
A popular, dedicated and caring teacher, she was for more than 35 years a positive influence on the lives of the students who were in her classes and/or participated in her many musical productions.
Helen Allen was a member of First United Methodist Church of Dahlgren, where she frequently served as the pianist for church services for many years. She was a member of the Belle Rive/Dahlgren Order of the Eastern Star.
There will always be a very special place for her in the hearts of her family, friends and former students.
Funeral services will be held Feb. 20 at 10 a.m. at Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren. The Rev. Gary Whipple will officiate. Burial will follow in the Dahlgren IOOF Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 19 at Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren.
