Funeral service for John Roy Acker, 79, of Piedmont, will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home and Crematory with the Rev. Tommy Ledbetter officiating. Burial will follow at Goshen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:30 - 8 tonight at the funeral home. Mr. Acker died Wednesday at Gadsden Regional Medical Center. Survivors include one daughter, Cathy Lanigan (Neale), of Goshen; one son, John T. Acker, of Eastaboga; five grandchildren, Lori Burt (Lee), Wade Singleton (Candace), Katie Winkles, Tyler Acker and Rebecca Williams (Dusty); four great-grandchildren, Riley Winkles, Dyani Burt, Aubrie Winkles and Wyatt Winkles; and two sisters, Betty Jordan, of Ellisville and Sue McCarley (Bill), of Piedmont. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Mr. Acker was a resident of the Piedmont area most of his life. He was a graduate of Spring Garden School and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Goshen United Methodist Church, retired from Liberty National Life Insurance Company and the United States Postal Service and enjoyed gardening and the outdoors. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elwanna J. Acker.Published in The Anniston Star on February 4, 2010
