Milton Lafayette Decker began life in the state of Ohio, on August 28th, 1860. He was one of a family of eight children born to Absalom and Sarah ( Rees) Decker. At the age of eighteen, he started in business as a ( illegible) . Later he was a lumber buyer in Quebec, Canada and following this with two years insurance business in Iowa. He then came to Bloomingdale, Mich., where he engaged in the drug business for a period of six years. He then went to Colorado for a year and came back to Bloomingdale, the next year moving to Lacota which was his home until 1902, when he was elected Register of Deeds and moved to Paw Paw, which place has since been his home.

He conducted a drug business in Lacota and was also postmaster there for nine years. He held many official positions, among them, clerk of Geneva township six years, and supervisor three years, Register of Deeds of the county for four years, member of the Republican county committee nine years and president of the village here. At the close of his term as county official, he engaged in the mercantile business here and later opened a real estate office. In which business he was engaged in until his death. He was a member of the Order of Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias and Maccabees. He has been prominent in the business, official and political circles of Van Buren county for many years.

In December 1887, Mr. Decker was married to Miss Mina Eaton, daughter of Hon. R. C. Eaton. Two children were born to them, both now grown to manhood. Royal E., the present county clerk, and Vernon C., salesman for the Paw Paw Grape Juice company. He was a most devoted and indulgent husband and father. Never a wish was ever expressed by a member of his family, but what was gratified if within his power. His family was his pride and his joy, and for them he lived.
