"If a long life is thought to have special meaning, then the life of mother, Leatice K. Morgan, transposed that thought into reality. Born in Greer, S.C. on April 15, 1913 to Ilan Higgins and Milton King, she was the only child.
She departed this life on March 12, 2005. She moved to Beacon at an early age and attended Beacon City Schools in Beacon, N.Y. She met and married Johnson H. Morgan, Sr. in 1930. Out of that union ten children were born. Mother Morgan was blessed with a long and active life.
'I've trusted God with all my heart and sought to keep His ways... God, in return, has blessed my life and multiplied my days,' she said.
She was spiritually developed at an early age, and reared in the Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Beacon, N.Y., where she served as Sunday School Superintendent, Senior Choir Member and Vice-President of the Missionary Circle. She later went on to become a 'Church Member'. She served on many boards and in many organizations including N.Y.S. Parent Teachers Association; life member of the National and New York State Congress; Dutchess County Mental Health Board; Dutchess County United Way; and a life member of the National Association of Colored Women's Club, Inc. Locally, she was a Century Member of Eleanor-Roosevelt-Val-Kill Council. She was the recipient of several awards including the Eleanor Roosevelt Memorial Award; Dutchess County Legislators Awards; and the Achievement Award from N.Y.C. Halfway House. She was listed in the Community Leaders of America (1972 edition). She traveled extensively and visited the Holy Land, Europe, Africa and Japan, to name a few!
She leaves to cherish her memory, seven children: Louise Morgan and Dianne M. Simmons, both of Beacon, Giles and Charles Morgan, both of Poughkeepsie, Edward Morgan and his wife, Gail, of Wappingers Falls, Beverly Morgan of New York City, Albert Morgan and his wife, Gloria, of Columbia, S.C.; 24 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She leaves to cherish her memory, 12 foster children and a host of relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband, Johnson H. Morgan, Sr., in 1975; three sons: Johnson Morgan, Jr. in 1961, Donald Morgan in 1954 and Leonard Morgan in 1983; and three grandchildren: Wayne, Lynette and Gene Morgan.
Her motto: 'Never regret growing old. It's a privilege denied many.'
Visitation will be today, Thursday March 17, 2005 from 7-9 PM at Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church, 139 Main St., Beacon, N.Y. Services will begin at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 18 at the church, with the Rev. Richard Butler officiating. Interment will be at Fishkill Rural Cemetery, Fishkill, N.Y.
