Competitive Swimmer. Olympic Gold Medalist. Singer. Actress. She was a Brooklyn fireman's daughter who began swimming while a young girl. By the age of 13 she won her first competitive swimming competition for the 100 yard backstroke, the category she excelled in. In 1928 she was part of the United States Olympic Swim Team and placed fifth in the 100 yard backstroke category. By 1932, she won a gold medal in the same category at the Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles. In 1936 she was sceduled to participate again as a member of the Olympic Swim Team. On the transatlantic voyage to Berlin, Germany she was involved in an incident concerning public intoxication aboard ship and booted from the team by Avery Brundage, the team's secretary. In 1933 she married Art Jarrett, a singer and bandleader and for a time sang with his band. While she appeared in four motion pictures as herself, she made only one acting appearance playing Jane with fellow Olympian Glenn Morris as Tarzan in the 1938 film Tarzan's Revenge. In 1939 she wed second husband theatrical impressario Billy Rose who had been previously married to performer Fanny Brice. Rose featured Holm in the Aquacade at the 1939 New York World Fair. Her marriage to Billy Rose ended in divorce in 1954 and a few months later she wed oil rig executive Thomas Whalen.
