Civil War Confederate Soldier. From the district of Edgefield, South Carolina, Atkinson became a Private in Company F, 7th South Carolina Infantry. Through fearless service on scores of battlefields, this regiment had the unceremonious distinction of being known as the "The Bloody Seventh". Dying on the battlefield for his country during one of the regiment's fights was not this private's fate; it was disease. An ailment overcame him, and he died "at home" at the age of twenty-six.
