Mr. Powell was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ in Higginsville, and served on its church council. He was an Army veteran of World War I and was a charter member of the Higginsville Post of the American Legion. He was a past member of the board of directors of the Meyer Foundation in Higginsville.
Funeral services were at 10 am, Friday, 11 July 1986 at the Hoefer Chapel in Higginsville, with burial in the Higginsville City Cemetery.
