George Robert Powell, 79, of 616 E. 89th Terrace, died Sunday, 11 November 1979. He was born 27 June 1900 in Canton, Fulton County, Illinois, the first son of George William Powell (1871 - 1933) and Mary Cassandra "Kate" Rawlings Powell (1874 - 1970).

Mr. Powell entered the military on 1 October 1918 and served as a private in the US Army for the duration of WWI. Upon completion of his mlitary service, he attended the University of Illinois were he received a bachelor's degree and a master's degree and was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and Beta Theta Pi Fraternities. He then became a teacher and devoted the remainder of his life to education in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri.

On 30 December 1925, George Robert Powell married Dorothy Evelyn Thomas in Aurora, Kane County, Illinois. They then took up residence in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri, where he was engaged in teaching, and where they lived out the remainder of their lives.

Mr. Powell taught math, bookkeeping and biology at Westport High School from 1924 to 1926 and was a math instructor at the Pembroke-Country Day School from 1928 to 1932. He was vice principal of Southwest High School from 1936 to 1942 and of Southeast High School from 1942 until his retirement in 1969.

Mr. Powell was a deacon at the Calvary Baptist Church, 3921 Baltimore, and taught Sunday School there from 1924 to 1964. He was an associate of the Second Presbyterian Church and a director of the Keewaydin Boys Camp in Vermont from 1929 to 1936. He was a mason..

Services were at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, 14 November 1979 at the Stine and McClure Chapel. Mr. Powell's remains were cremated and interred at Fort Levenworth National Cemetery.
