Sharon Smolko Cartwright, 53, of Portland, Northampton County, died Holy Saturday morning, April 3, 2010, in VNA Hospice Inpatient Unit at CMC, Scranton, following a two year courageous battle with cancer. Born: In Peckville, she was raised in Jessup and her mother is Joan Russin Smolko of Jessup. She was the daughter of the late John R. Smolko. Personal: She was the wife of Bob Cartwright. She graduated from St. Michael's Parochial School in Jessup and was a graduate of Bishop O'Hara High School with honors. She graduated cum laude from Marywood College in 1977 and received her juris doctorate degree from the University of Pittsburgh Law School in 1980. She practiced law in Honesdale for seven years and has been a resident of Portland Boro the past 20 years, where she served as a member of town council for three terms and was the first woman ever elected as town council president. She was employed as a manager by Omega Tools, Portland. Her life was devoted to caring for and raising her daughters and being involved in soccer and softball activities. Sharon was a very kind and generous person. Her family would like to thank the entire staff of the Oncology Department at Easton Hospital, and also VNA Hospice Inpatient Unit at CMC for the wonderful care given to Sharon. Memberships: She was a former member of St. Michael's Church in Jessup. She was a member of St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, Portland. Survivors: Along with her mother and husband, she is also survived by her daughters, Rose and Sarah Cartwright, at home; a brother, John R. Smolko and his wife, Diane, Eynon; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Services: The funeral will be Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. from the Arthur A. Albini Funeral Home, 1003 Church Street, Jessup, with Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Michael's Church, First Avenue, Jessup. Interment, St. Michael's Cemetery, Jessup. Relatives and friends may call on Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be planned at a later date in the Portland area.
