Birth: 1846
Death: Jan. 11, 1865

Co. B, 34th Illinois Infantry

William Penn Averill was the son of Quaker minister, Sidney Spooner Averill, and his wife Elmira Lawson Averill. He was born in 1846.

His cousin, Volney Averill and Willie, Sidney's oldest son, broke with the Quaker tradition of nonviolence and enlisted in the 34th Illinois Infantry, Oct. 15, 1864, as soon as they came of age. That in itself was a blow to his father's beliefs and principles but neither Sidney nor the rest of the family was prepared for Willie's death just a few months later on Jan. 11, 1865. While the regiment was engaged in Sherman's decisive march through Georgia, Willie died of unspecified disease while in recruit training at Evansville, Indiana.
