Friedrich Meinecke
Birth: Oct. 20, 1862
Death: Feb. 6, 1954

Historian. Meinecke was a German historian of the late 19th and 20th centuries and author of many prestigious works. He was the editor of the "Historische Zeitschrift", a leading German historical journal, from 1896 to 1935. An enthusiastic German nationalist, he glorified the German state in his book "Cosmopolitanism and the National State", published in 1908. He was at first attracted to Hitler's German nationalism, and then became horrified at Nazi criminality. His disenchantment is obvious in his last book, The German Catastrophe" (1946), in which he tried to explain how the Nazis were able to come to power. In 1948 he helped found the Free University of Berlin. (bio by: Rick Watson)
